The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
