European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
